The Prince and the Dressmaker

Topics include gender identity and self expression with relation to gender identity, family pressure. That tangent aside, this book is go. I think my main problem here is the setting and tone of the book. Such a lovely hook and beautiful images My daughter actually read this at age 8 but it definitely addresses how we see ourselves and what makes us feel beautiful and seen.

Book Review: The Prince & The Dressmaker

And then something rather remarkable, and certainly, dramatic happens: His fortunes rather unexpectedly reverse, as some of the same forces that were responsible for his downfall not only learn to accept him, almost overnight, but to even celebrate him. That, however, is a terrible criticism to level at the book, as it hardly seems fair to blame a fairy tale for having an unrealistic, wish-fulfilling, happily-ever-after of an ending. That The Prince and the Dressmaker invites such criticism is actually a credit to it. Prince Sebastian is the Crown Prince of Belgium, and he and his parents the king and queen are staying in Paris for the summer. A ball is being held to celebrate his sixteenth birthday, and his parents are eager for him to find a princess to marry, as he will have to carry on the royal line. The dressmaker is Frances, one of many seamstresses working at a local dress shop.

Read More. The Prince and the Dressmaker. It's a really cute story but, it's not too saccharine as to be unbearable. This book is the anachronistic 19th century French fairytale meets Project Runway but with cross dressing and deconstruction of gender norms of my dreams. I wanted the ending to be hopeful but still make sense to the characters.
