The Mother : Pearl S. Buck :

In , an American woman traveled from her home in China to settle her severely impaired daughter in a New Jersey institution. She did so with borrowed money, as she could not afford the fees. While her younger daughter was at nursery school, she chained herself every morning — another madwoman in the attic — to a battered typewriter. The 9-year-old she left in America had made a sport of flinging porridge and dirt at the keys. She felt her story already formed, at the tips of her fingers, and so it must have been: Five months later, a completed manuscript sailed to America. Pearl Buck later became the first American woman to win a Nobel for literature.

Dragon Seed (1944)

In the kitchen of the small thatched farmhouse the mother sat on a low bamboo stool behind the earthen stove and fed grass deftly into the hole where a fire burned beneath the iron cauldron. The blaze was but just caught and she moved a twig here, a handful of leaves there, and thrust in a fresh bit of the dried grass she had cut from the hillsides last autumn. In the corner of the kitchen as near as she could creep to the fire sat a very old and weazened woman, wrapped in a thick padded coat of bright red cotton stuff, whose edges showed under a patched coat of blue she wore over it. She was half blind with a sore disease of the eyes, and this had well-nigh sealed her eyelids together. But through the small slits left open she could see a great deal still, and she watched the flare of the flames as they leaped and caught under the strong and skillful hands of the mother.

  1. Pearl S. Buck was truly a pioneer in appreciating the People's Republic of China and its emergence as a world power. Through her writings and humanitarian activities, she often made attempts to reduce the cultures of China and the United States to their lowest common denominator in order to bridge the two worlds in which she lived. Although Pearl Sydenstricker was born in America , she was taken to China by her missionary parents when she was only a few months old. 👨‍🚀

  2. As the daughter of missionaries , Buck spent most of her life before in Zhenjiang , China. In , she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces". After returning to the United States in , she continued writing prolifically, became a prominent advocate of the rights of women and minority groups , and wrote widely on Chinese and Asian cultures , becoming particularly well known for her efforts on behalf of Asian and mixed-race adoption. Her parents, Southern Presbyterian missionaries , traveled to China soon after their marriage on July 8, , but returned to the United States for Pearl's birth. 😒
